PDSnake
A downloadable game
The classic game Snake for the Playdate console.
Eat apples. Get long. Avoid yourself.
Includes high-score tracking, dark mode, sound effect toggle, and a battery saver mode. PDSnake runs at a rock-solid 50 FPS. Battery saver mode halves that.
I'd love to know what your high-score is! Mine is currently 36.
How to play:
- Use the d-pad to change the direction you're moving in
- You wrap around the screen
- As you eat more apples, you move a little faster
Why Another Snake Game?
Decades later, I find Snake to still be challenging, interesting, and fun. It's so simple yet engaging. I noticed there aren't any no-frills versions of Snake for Playdate. Sometimes it's nice to just have a classic version available to play.
Snake is also a great way to learn new game development tooling.
Learn to Make Playdate Games
PDSnake is a polished version of a game from Make Games for Playdate with Lua, a beginner-friendly book about learning game programming for the curious little yellow console.
Credits

Much as I love Snak from Season 1, this is a great pure Snake game :D really responsive which makes it super playable.

My best so far is 41…I find it better to avoid wrapping the snake where possible, as I struggle to remember that it’s going to hit its own tail 😂
Thank you! And yes, the wrapping is a total trap the further you get. 😂
